My Review
Four Stars — Good Read
A Box of Frogs by Josh Hellyer is a holiday mystery set against the picturesque yet unsettling winter backdrop of Ontario’s Muskoka Lakes. Beginning with the quirky death of an eccentric retired Senator, the novel quickly establishes high stakes for the deceased's heirs and an intriguing central puzzle that spans two continents and sustains suspense through to its surprising finale.
Hellyer crafts a well-structured mystery filled with red herrings, credible suspects, and enough twists to keep readers guessing without sacrificing logic. The investigation unfolds at a steady pace, maintaining tension throughout the novel and leading to a largely satisfying resolution. The cast is lively and varied, bringing personality and humour to the story, even if the number of characters can occasionally make them difficult to distinguish.
The novel is not without shortcomings. Some key clues are so subtly embedded in the narrative that readers may overlook them, and some character decisions feel driven more by plot requirements than by believable motivation. At times, the mystery relies on characters withholding information that could have resolved conflicts much sooner. The book’s humour is often charming, but it occasionally distracts from the plot and does not always land effectively.
Readers who enjoy traditional whodunits with a comedic edge will find much to appreciate in A Box of Frogs. Its intricate plotting, memorable setting, and rewarding conclusion outweigh its occasional lapses in characterization and clarity, making it an entertaining and engaging mystery for the holiday season.
