The Bootlegger's Confession
by Allan Levine
In 1922, U.S. Prohibition was in full swing, and the bootlegging business was booming for Jewish-Canadian entrepreneurs Saul and Lou Sugarman. To monitor their border transactions, they set up their sister Rae and husband Max in a general store in southern Manitoba, near the North Dakota border. However, one night, several hours after a successful bootleg deal, Max Roter was found dead. Determined to solve the murder, Lou Sugarman hired Winnipeg’s most renowned private detective, Sam Klein. What began as a routine investigation quickly spiralled into a kidnapping crisis, thrusting Sam Klein into the perilous world of 1920s New York City’s mob.
